Gordon Yeager runs a boutique bicycle mechanic service in the San Diego area. He has 18 years experience in the bicycle industry including neutral support for USA Cycling and Mavic SSC. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his friends and family, and riding his bike as much as he can. Follow him at www.twitter.com/velohangar and www.velohangar.com, and find his gear reviews and tips in his monthly column here.

LAVA Magazine – Gordon Yeager

Up this month is not so much a review, but a tutorial on that core tenet of bike maintenance: lubing your chain. Not all chain lubes are created equal, nor do they work on all components. I’ve had loads of clients walk into the shop this month asking about lubes and what they should use. “Does it really matter what I use?” “What’s the difference between wax and low viscosity?” “Can I just spray on any old lube in my toolbox?” And the list goes on.

Chain lube preference is dependant on the climate you live in and how clean you want your bike. If you use that blue and yellow can in your toolbox and don’t wipe off the excess, your bike will get messy. If you live in a wet climate and are using a low viscosity oil, you will be reapplying chain lube very frequently. It’s not mandatory that you use a certain brand or type of lube on your chain but, it helps to know what is recommended. It’s also important to find out what your mechanic is using on your chain. Try to stay with the same type for compatibility.

Having a lube personal preference is fine by me. In fact I condone it. You know your riding conditions, ride characteristics and maintenance better than anyone. Are you the type of rider that just goes out and gets it done? Do you only oil your chain when it sticks or squeaks? Do you live in a wet climate? These are all good things to know.

So who are the usual suspects on my workbench? Squirt (wax-based dry lube), Pedro’s GO! (low-viscosity wet lube), and Dumonde Tech G-10 Bio-Green (vegetable based, wet lube). I’m located in San Diego County where we get very little rain over the year—the quintessential dry climate. Even though it’s dry here, if you ride anywhere near the coast you will pick up sand on your drivetrain. Can’t avoid it. No matter what you use, chain wipe down is a must.

I use Squirt on most mountain bikes and road/tri bikes where I know the rider won’t be keeping the chain clean or re-lubing frequently. The application is pretty straight forward. You need to make sure the chain is completely clean and dry. Then, drip Squirt on the chain while backpedaling. Allow the lube to dry for five minutes then re-apply. Once the initial coat is dry the lube should last a couple weeks. You only have to drip a little more on every couple weeks. Fantastic stuff. It really does reduce chainsuck, and the scent isn’t horrible (the taste is though, not recommended.) It creates a waxy candy coating to your chain. Good stuff. Be warned though—there are loads of wax-based lubes out on the market, but I haven’t found one that rivals Squirt yet.

Pedro’s GO! lube is a vegetable-based synthetic low-viscosity lube. I use it mostly on road and tri bikes, when I know the rider is going to take the time to keep their chain wiped down. Being a low-viscosity lube it soaks into the chain link and protects the metal. Application is simple: drip the lube onto each link and wipe off excess. Easy. It’s a safe bet that if your chain starts making noise it just needs a few more drips. Always wipe off the excess or your chain and frame will become a mess. It smells like vegetable oil, not horrible either. I wouldn’t cook with this stuff though, so don’t ingest. I like to use biodegradable oils when I can.

I’ve been using Dumonde Tech’s G-10 Bio lube since it was first introduced a few years back. Not the easiest to find, but great stuff. Dumonde has been producing oils and lubes for motorcycles since 1985. The big drawback for me was that their earlier lubes, “Original Formula” and “Lite,” had a scent that could peel paint. To my surprise, Dumonde Tech G-10 smelled like fruit cake. When you work with chemicals all day the fumes start fighting each other. G-10 will win that battle every time. Hands down the quietest lube in the Hangar. Silences even the loudest chains out there. It’s a touch thicker than the GO! lube so I tend to use it on bikes that see daily abuse. Commuters, athletes in training, anyone that uses their bike more than four days a week will love Dumonde’s G-10 Bio.

I you have any questions on lubes or anything else service-oriented please email me. Next month I’ll review an item’s durability and strength from a mechanic’s viewpoint as usual.

Product Review: Dumonde Tech Chain Lube Next to “So which is better? Shimano or Campy?” probably nothing else [...]

Product Review: Dumonde Tech Chain Lube

Next to “So which is better? Shimano or Campy?” probably nothing else generates more tightly held personal views than how and with what to lube a chain. So with some reluctance, I throw a line of products in the ring for your consideration: Dumonde Tech Racing Oils, specifically their Bicycle Chain Lubes—Lite and Original. Maybe these are widely known to most of you, but they were new to me when I spotted them last summer. Three experienced bike mechanics recommended them highly, though each quickly added they required some care in how to use them. My experience in a nutshell: A little more picky and time consuming initially, but yielding superior performance, chain life, and ultimately taking less of your time over the life of the chain.
Dumonde technology was originally developed for high-revving Kart engines, and later found broad acceptance in the motorcycle world. It forms of bond with the metal at a micro level, effectively filling in minute imperfections in the inevitable bumps and holes in the material itself. In tech-speak, the Dumonde approach is a polymerization lubricant. Whew.

You must start with an absolutely clean chain. A thorough wash with a bike-specific citrus lube will do the job. (Dumonde makes one, too, though I think others will do nicely.) The chain must be completely dry before applying. ONE DROP at each pivot. Wow. That’s takes forever, huh? Well, actually under two minutes. But then you’re golden for many, many rides. Run the chain through a rag after each ride. (You should be doing this anyway, regardless of what lube you use.) How do you know when to re-apply? The chain becomes a little noisy. Put some more lube on. One drop per pivot.

The Original formula is more heavy duty, perhaps best on Cycle Cross or Off Road machines, but I would use it for my first application on your clean, new chain. Original will continue to work on your road bike, but I switched to Lite for reapplications. Lite is really just a somewhat more diluted form of the Original. After a really wet, grungy road bike ride, go back to Original once in a while.

I won’t set any expectations on how many miles you can expect on your Dumonde-lubed chain, because chain life also varies so much by chain brand and model, whether you spin more or push bigger gears, whether you climb a lot or not, and other factors. I’ll just say I’ve more than doubled my own typical miles per chain. The additional time to work drop by drop is more than compensated for by the reduction in how often you apply the lube. Did I mention the entire Dumonde line is bio-friendly?

-Dave Kelley

Peanut Butter & Co.TWENTY12 brought their best legs with a quartet or riders ready to prove their mantle at the Stage One of the Sea Otter Classic criterium. Kristin Armstrong drove a vicious pace from the gun, setting the tempo for the first five laps of the race, leaving a wake of destruction; she is one fast mother

Primal/Map My Ride and Missing Link Coaching Systems tried to take away control from Peanut Butter & Co.TWENTY12 by firing off attacks, these were quickly foiled. Tibco’s Jennifer Wheeler was active in pursuing sprint points. Rivera countered an intermediate sprint with a solid effort gaining a gap on the start finish hill only to be shut down by Vanderkitten & Tibco riders, with Armstrong and Olivia Dillon back on the front the pace remained high the entire race.

Dillon and Alisha Welsh played a vital role in the closing laps of this long criterium course. Alisha more known for her goat like climbing prowess drove the pace heading into the last lap, then it was Olivia ‘she chews nails’ Dillon’s turn at the front, she deposited Armstrong and Rivera at the final turn where Armstrong proceeded to lay down big watts in the final 250 meters finishing it off with a bike throw, the second of her life. Tibco’s Samantha Schneider took 2nd with Coryn Rivera a very close 3rd.

This marks Kristin’s first win since becoming a mother, she will wear yellow today on the very challenging Fort Ord road race course.

Wisconsin definitely isn’t a place any of us would have chosen to travel to in the coldest month of Winter, but Ray’s park definitely made the trip across the United States worth it.

Round 1 Update Daytona

The Team arrived to the track Wednesday and began setup and final preparations for the start of the 2011 AMA Superbike series in Daytona Fl. After many weeks of hard work designing, building, allocating and structuring the team, our Bikes rolled out of the new transporter ready to impress. The excitement of starting a new chapter of Aussie Dave Racing was upon us and it was time to get the ball rolling.
Thursday morning saw rain early clearing out by 2:00 allowing for a 50min session for practice/qualifying. With few laps put in and even fewer changes to the bikes, All qualified and were in for the races featuring four ADR/Fly machines on the Superbike grid.

Dave Anthony: Position 13, Chris Trounson: Position 15, Jordy Burgess: Position 17, Johnny Rock Page: Position 20

Race time was abound, the boys were ready, the green flag dropped and everyone got off the line unscathed and headed into turn 1. After jockeying for position through the infield turns, racing stopped as a red flag was put out due to four riders crashing in turns 4 and 5. Unfortunately Chris Trounson was a part of one of the incidents and his weekend ended short with a broken Collar Bone. He is in good spirits and is looking forward to returning for the next round as his injury should be healed during the break of the season.

After a complete restart and some great racing, Dave anthony finished 10th, Jordy Burgess 14th and Johnny Rock page 19th for the day.

Saturday was a beautiful day with temperatures comfortable and Sunny! The green flag dropped and the boys worked hard to position themselves for what turned out to be another great AMA Superbike race! Dave fought hard to maintain a ninth place finish ending up 8th in the points for the combined results of the weekend. Jordy had a slight mechanical on the bike but stuck it out for a 19th place finish and Johnny Rock ended the weekend with a 20th place finish putting ADR/Fly in a good position for the next round of action coming up May 13 – 15 at Infineon Raceway, Sonoma, CA.

Aussie Dave Racing would like to thank all involved for our weekend of success. A big thank you to all our partners who support our program this year and we look forward to promoting your products and image throughout the 2011 Season! Posters will be printed soon and please keep up with us on our website and our facebook fan page!

From MTBR.com

The Specialized AllRide Tour is finally official after Specialized opened their doors to us late in the season which has been amazing. We could not be more proud to partner with such an incredible company with a vision that parallels our own; GET MORE PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY KIDS, PASSIONATE ABOUT MOUNTAIN BIKES! Our job description is to get out and make a spectacle at events with the AllRide Academy youngsters, bring bikes to eager riders to race and play with, find kids who need help enjoying mountain biking and find a way to get them started and share the camaraderie, love and passion that is mountain biking.

The Specialized AllRide Tour’s first official event, the Sram XX launch and the marvelous Ashland Super D were great venues to show off our new graphics!

What an awesome 4 days in Ashland, Oregon! Kirt and I had been anxiously waiting for the van and trailer to be wrapped with the new Specialized AllRide Tour graphics. Kirt sent Specialized a drawing of what he envisioned and BAM! It has come to life!

Proud of our new bright vehicle that clearly screams “WE LOVE TO SHRED!” we headed to Ashland to meet up with the Sram crew for their 2×10 product launch. We were joined by members of the cycling media and other Sram athletes, Rebecca Rusch (Specialized, RedBull, Adventure racing extraordinaire, 24 hour solo world champion and all around rad woman) and Ross Schnell (Super sweet and talented Trek rider).

The first day of riding with the Sram crew and media was a real Bipolar Oregon experience. We started the ride in dumping snow with 3 or 4 inches firmly on the ground. The fireroad at the start was completely covered in large 2 ft deep patches of snow with giant slick ruts down the middle.

The course was muddy and slick and fun as heck that way! Over the next few days “happy Oregon” emerged and the sun popped out, the snow melted (and was plowed) and we had beautiful sunshine and a perfect course for the 2 days of racing.

This was Kirt’s first official Super D race and he had a blast. He rode all week doing interesting human tricks on a bike for members of the cycling media and the Sram crew and was really excited to race the course! Our friend and filmmaker, Taylor Sage took some good footage of Kirt ripping it up. www.pinkbike.com All that dirt jump and pumptrack building in Bend hasn’t left much time for pedaling, but he said he was blazing the downhills on his Sram XX Enduro!

And of course, in Kirt fashion, when they counted down for him to start his race run he pedaled off the line in a stand up wheelie! Not cool that I didn’t get it on film. dang.

I (Lindsey) raced my first PRO race. Scary. Ashland is one of my favorite races where the long high speed sections and punchy climbs suit me. I rode my 24lb carbon S-works ERA with 3″ of travel and railed that bike! Most people were on 4″ or 5″ and that little ERA rode like a machine and climbed like an angel. It’s just that I didn’t really have my legs race day… Although I felt amazing on the downhills and was having a fairly good run when I pedaled full speed into a rock on a FLAT section, broke my pedal, slid across the ground and cheese-grated my hip and arm, fixed my bike then finished the fast lippy downhill water bar section and switchbacks with one foot clipped in and boy was it hectic. Poopy. We celebrated as usual after the race with fans and racers with our yummy Deschutes Brewery beer!

When we returned from Ashland, Kirt did a “Bike Rodeo” (that’s what we call them here in cowboy country) where he taught a group of kids from Cascades Academy about helmet safety by doing his infamous melon drop. He shows a “brain” splatter without a helmet and a “brain” somewhat held together while wearing a helmet. It’s quite effective. Then we took them to the pumptrack and let them loose while teaching safety and skills. Kirt has been out at the pumptrack every day all day when he’s home so he can get his project finished before hitting the road for a month!
